So I was sitting at a light the other day when a dark blue or green second gen Cayenne pulled up next to me. Nothing particularly remarkable there, considering is appeared to be a base model, perhaps even a diesel or hybrid. It had the basic, smallish 5-spoke wheels, roof racks, and black plastic cladding around the wheel wells, the bottom of the bumper and the rest of the car. It also lacked vents and fins. In short it looked like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I was a bit surprised, then, that the changing of the light was accompanied by a furious roar from the lane next to me, followed immediately by the shockingly swift departure of the SUV next to me. It was only at the following light, when I pulled up behind it, that I noticed that it possessed quad exhaust instead of twin, and, more tellingly, had the words, "Cayenne Turbo" in silver cursive across the tailgate. For those of you who aren't aware, the Cayenne Turbo is easily distinguishable from the base because it looks like this:

Kinja'd!!!

Huge grey and black wheels on thin tires, no chrome or plastic on the bumpers or wheel wells, no roof rack, and four exhaust. The one I saw went and sounded like a Turbo, and said it was a Turbo. But apart from the quad square exhaust, it looked for all the world like a plebeian base model. So what exactly did I see? A souped-up base? Or is it possible to order a Cayenne Turbo with none of the visual clues?

EDIT: A quick visit to the configurator and some playing around reveals that while nearly every Turbo I've seen has had the fancy sporty appearance package, it is still an option (this is a Porsche, how did I not guess?) and the Turbo initially looks pretty much like a diesel.

That's a Turbo S in the picture.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a Turbo, which can be had with the more common base wheels.

Gotcha. I actually just went on the configurator, and it turns out that while it seems 99% of owes go for the sporty on-road appearance package, it actually starts out normal. That explains what I saw.

I see...so a Turbo does start out looking like a base.

People who buy the base Cayenne don't mind that it looks, well, basic. But when they spend a little bit more and buy the Turbo, they don't want others to think their Cayenne is basic, shit it says "Turbo" on it, it should be sporty. I for one prefer the base one.

I too was stuck in traffic next to one the other day. We were inching uphill in heavy traffic, side by side, with the windows down. I thought it sounded funny, like the engine made funny whooshing noises. Very small, nearly imperceptible. Then it accelerated and I saw the quad exhausts and big wheels.
